Originally from the Himalayan mountains of Tibet, the Lhasa Apso (known in its homeland as Apso Seng Kyi or “Bark Lion Sentinel Dog”) served for centuries as an indoor sentinel in Buddhist monasteries.
Because they were considered bringers of good luck, they were rarely sold and usually only left Tibet as highly prized gifts from the Dalai Lama. Today, that same “assertive and aloof” character remains, making them one of the most loyal and distinctive companions in the dog world.
